Strengthening Connections: Mondo Foundation's Journey into the Heart of HELP's Work!

From September last week to the first week of October, we had the pleasure of welcoming Matthew Band, the new CEO, and Andrew Alright, the new Chair of Mondo Foundation, to our community. As our largest funding partner, Mondo Foundation supports the Saathi Teachers Programme, along with our Scholarship, School Building, and Livelihood initiatives. Their visit allowed us to help them immerse in our community and see our Saathi teachers in action along with observing other works of HELP that Mondo Foundation has supported.

Following their visit, we hosted a Reflective Gathering of Saathi teachers on October 4th and 5th, bringing together our current cohorts to share their inspiring stories and achievements from the past six months in the classroom. This gathering was an opportunity for reflection, learning, and connection, as teachers discussed their experiences, challenges, and the bonds they have built in their schools. We also held discussions about recruitment for the 6th cohort and celebrated Dashain festival together, fostering a spirit of unity and gratitude.

We were honored to have Dr. Bidyanath Koirala with us, who provided instant feedback and invaluable guidance during the discussions. Special thanks to our Saathi teachers, the Mondo Foundation team, and our dedicated staff for their active engagement and meaningful contributions. This gathering was a heartening reminder of the impact we are creating together in education and community development.

Transform The Way Children Receive Education

In Nepal more than half of all students enrolled in public (government) schools will never finish. In 2014, approximately 1.13 million students were enrolled in Grade 1 in Nepal, a figure stated in the government report. Out of which, 7.8 million were enrolled in the government/public school system and the remaining 3.8 million private schools. In 2024, only 444,785 of those students appeared for its 10th grade exams, which means, 685,215 students who enrolled in Grade 1 in 2014 dropped out before they reached 10th grade.

Despite increased enrollment in school level at 97.5% with relatively high investment from the government, high drop out remains a challenge. Out of 100 students enrolled in grade one, 36 students leave their study by the time they reach grade 10.

Help us improve the future of children by keeping them in education for longer.

Be More Than A Teacher, Be A Friend.

In Nepal there is still a culture of punishment within the education system. In a study we conducted amongst 1100 children between grades 1 to 8 across 20 schools, 71% of them reported that they have experienced some kind of corporal punishment in Schools. Children will sit in the classroom and be scared that they will be physically punished for not understanding, not doing their homework, not having their books or stationery.

"This culture can create a lot of trauma which can have long lasting effects on their lives."

Co-Founder's Story of Starting
the Saathi Teachers Programme

Jimmy Lama is a co-founder of HELP and one of the brainchilds for starting the Saathi Teachers Programme in 2019. Jimmy is originally from a rural area in Helambu where he attended school. From an early age Jimmy had an understanding of the gaps in education in his local community due to his experience. Jimmy witnessed the vulnerability of people without education and channeled this, along with external support from rural communities, as inspiration to start the organisation.
Jimmy has an MA in International Development from IDS, the University of Sussex, and has travelled the world extensively. He started his career in International Development working at MondoChallenge Foundation in 2008. Since then he has represented the charity in Nepal working to attract partnership and funding to support the projects HELP runs in Nepal. He has also worked closely with charities like School in a Bag and International Teachers Association for over a decade. Jimmy was instrumental in introducing other charities like Interhands Foundation, Go Global Vermont, Adventure Aid UK and Himalayan Hilfe, who have all supported or are supporting the various initiatives under HELP.
Here is what Jimmy has to say about the importance of working at the primary level and the Saathi Teachers Programme.
“I strongly believe that the society and the world we live in can only be more equal, happier, united and strong when everyone gets equal opportunity for education. And that must start with a stronger foundation right from the primary level. Primary schooling must be about giving our children the happiest experience, providing the most caring support, building confidence, shaping their character and filling them with curiosity, enthusiasm and dreams.
In our experience of doing educational projects all over Nepal over the past 14 years, we felt that these elements were not the strongest of experiences for many children. We felt we can come up with something to address the gap and build a programme whereby children can experience and feel in their school, not just great buildings, beautiful classrooms, and abundance of resources but also an environment and support system to make them feel happy, safe, confident, joyful and supported for coming to school. Hence, soon after completing the school reconstruction we did for four years after the devastating 2015 Earthquake, the Saathi Teachers Programme was initiated. When I think about my best days in school, I think of some of the teachers during my primary school days as it was so much about heart to heart connection. I don’t remember every day how well they taught me but I remember every single moment when and how much they cared for me. It was these positive experiences that I always look back on. Hence, at Saathi Teachers Programme, we begin with the thought that all children must be put in the centre of the attention and must be given all the possible support with the utmost belief in their future and potential.”

"We are seeing a crisis in the rural communities in Nepal where there us not only a huge shortage of teachers, but also where children are going to school and not learning anything."
With your help we can make life-changing and long-lasting improvements to Education.
